League of Legends positions: top, jungle, mid, bot and support

Updated on October 20, 2026

Every League of Legends match on Summoner's Rift splits a team's five players into positions. Understanding each role helps you pick champions, position yourself in fights and play as a team.

Top

The top lane is the most isolated on the map. Top laners spend much of the game in one-on-one duels, so the position suits durable fighters and tanks that can handle pressure and become the frontline in team fights.

A good top laner knows when to push the lane and when to use Teleport to help the team elsewhere on the map.

Jungle

The jungler has no fixed lane: they defeat neutral jungle monsters, help other lanes with ganks and contest objectives like Dragons, the Herald and Baron. It is the position that demands the most map awareness and timing.

Champions with good mobility, crowd control or burst damage usually do well in the jungle.

Mid

The mid lane is the shortest, letting you reach neighboring lanes quickly. That is why it suits mages and assassins, who deal a lot of damage in a short time and can help the jungler with plays around the map.

Bot lane: marksman and support

Two champions play the bottom lane. The marksman deals steady damage with basic attacks and scales hard with items but is fragile early; the support protects the marksman, controls vision with wards and starts or stops fights.

Supports can be enchanters, who heal and shield, or tanks and engagers, who lock down enemies for the team.

How to pick your position

If you like duels, try top. If you prefer steering the match, try jungle. For damage and fast plays, mid is the place. And if you enjoy playing as a pair or helping the team, marksman and support are great starts. Each champion page at the Tavern shows class and difficulty to help you choose.
